The name Katithanda belongs to Australia’s largest most spectacular salt lake, Kati Thanda – Lake Eyre, one spanning hundreds of Kilometres and famous for it’s stunning mists and shimmering salt crystals. The name was chosen due to it’s Aboriginal heritage of the Arabana people and the Lake’s location, here in South Australia, where our cattery is located. The Australian Mist breed is the only cat breed to have originated from Australia, developed by my Mentor and breed coach Dr Truda Straede. As the only breeder of Australian Mists here in South Australia, we are so very fortunate to have our cattery lines stem directly from Dr Straede’s, and we have had the opportunity to work closely with her in developing our South Australian foundations.
I had always kept cats. Indeed, they were a big part of my growing up and have maintained a relatively constant presence throughout my life. Even when I first ventured out of my parents home, a cat – a beautiful chocolate seal point Birman boy going by the name Bailey, was the first thing I sought for companionship. In 2016, that year heralded in the return of breast cancer for me, after an initial scare in 2005, and a multitude of other health woes. An anxiousness and depression stemming from the cancer and subsequent treatments, led me to seek the comfort of what was familiar to me and the unconditional love that came from fostering kittens and homeless cats. I found it quite simple really, I loved them and in turn they loved me back.
A love for the Australian Mist was found, after a chance introduction to Dr Straede, and after a multitude of consistent emails back and forth on the breed (and breeding in general!) a pregnant chocolate Mist by the name of Grace with impeccable temperament and type found her way into my home.
Thus starts our story…
